| Life on the Ocean Wave for Teenagers |
A group of lucky teenagers experienced life on the ocean after being chosen to take part in a sea adventure ahead of the Tall Ships Race.
The eight learners - Michael Horner, 17, Jonny Todd, 16, Jonathan Short, 17, Stephen Ellis, 18, Sarah Gunn, 17, Chris Stephenson, 17, Malcolm Farnsworth, 18 and Adam Moon, 17 - who attend Barnardo's Palmersville Training in Benton, worked as crew members as part of the 11 day voyage.
Along with three Barnardo's staff, Caroline Clark, Cath Rice and Bob Devitt, they sailed on the Lowestoft based smack Excelsior and took part in the Parade of Sail before the Tall Ships Race.
They initially flew to Paris, before taking a train to Cherbourg to join the ship and then days of hard work and adventure followed as they sailed across the Channel and up the east coast, arriving to take part with all the other tall ships for the Parade of Sail on July 25.
Caroline said before the trip "We will all be doing full crew duties such as cleaning, taking watch and cooking over the 11 days of getting to know the ship and then sailing."
"It is a trip of a lifetime for the young people and a huge event coming into the river with all the other tall ships. This is the bit we really wanted to do, rather than the race itself and the whole of Palmersville Project will be there to cheer us as we come into the Tyne." |
